LAWRENCE P. DOSS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION AWARDS 25TH SCHOLARSHIP




DETROIT, April 10, 2007 – The Lawrence P. Doss Scholarship Foundation (LPDSF) will announce and present scholarships to five new awardees at its 5th Anniversary Awards Ceremony at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on May 16, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. These new scholarships will bring to a total of twenty-five (25) awarded since the Foundation’s inception in 2001. Noted media personality Amyre Makupson will be our keynote speaker and WXYZ TV’s Chuck Stokes will serve as our Master of Ceremonies for the 5th straight year. Tickets are $75 each and can be obtained by calling (313) 891-5834. Ad space in the Awards journal is also available by calling Seif Doss at this same number or e-mailing him at lpdjournalad@aol.com. If you do not have an ad, he can design one for you. A new and exciting addition to this year’s awards ceremony will be a raffle drawing for the winner of round-trip air for two to Barbados, staying at a villa for 7 nights, complete with a pool, maid and cook. Tickets are just $150 each and only 200 are being sold – the best odds in town!!!

The Foundation was founded to provide university and college scholarships to disadvantaged Detroit high school seniors committing to major in finance, management, business, or accounting and to return to Detroit to contribute to the city’s workforce and economy. These scholarships are renewable annually for four years, with a potential of $20,000 to each recipient. Our scholarship recipients have come from Finney, Murray Wright, Cass Tech, King, Renaissance, Mumford, Henry Ford and Western International High Schools. They have chosen to attend Michigan State, Wayne State, Central and Eastern Michigan University, Columbia of Chicago, Bowling Green State University, Marygrove College and Northwood University.

The Foundation was established to honor the late Larry Doss, whose many civic contributions included President of New Detroit, Inc., President of the Coleman A. Young Foundation, interim executive director of the Schools of the 21st Century and organizing the Inner City Business Improvement Forum (ICBIF). He served on boards of the American Natural Resources (ANR), the University of Detroit Mercy, the United Way, the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., Harper Hospital, the Hudson-Webber Foundation and the National Urban Coalition.

SIX DETROIT H.S. SENIORS AWARDED $20,000 SCHOLARSHIPS

DETROIT, May 31, 2006—Six Detroit high school seniors have been selected as Lawrence P. Doss Scholars, each receiving $20,000 college scholarships--$5,000 annually for four years. They are the fourth class of Scholars since the Foundation was founded in 2001, bringing to 20 the number of Doss scholarships awarded.

Scholarship recipients, who are provided with mentors, must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better and sign a pledge to work in Detroit after graduation and contribute to the betterment of the City, Board Chairman Arthur Johnson (NAACP past president and retired Wayne State University Vice President-University Relations) and Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Judith Doss said.

The Foundation awards the scholarships each year to a selected number of disadvantaged Detroit public school seniors entering a four-year college or university to pursue studies full time in business, finance, management, or accounting.

The 2006 recipients are:

Tiffany Adams, a graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, who will major in Business at Northwood University. While in high school, she was a member of the Business Professionals of America and volunteered at Harper Hospital.

April Herriotte, a graduate of Mumford High School, who will major in Marketing at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She was a member of the Business Professionals of America and was on the swim and golf teams, and participated in Upward Bound and Midnight Golf. She is on her church’s Youth Usher Board and is active in a number of its volunteer programs, including feeding the homeless.

Charity Kemp, a graduate of Cass Technical High School, who will major in Accounting at Wayne State University. She was vice president of the Business Professionals of America, CEO of Ford Motor Company’s Future Visionaries, and a member of Cass’ Pep Club. She was also active in school community activities, including Walk Against Breast Cancer, Thanksgiving Baskets, and the school’s Christmas Toy Drive.

Monet Ruffin, a graduate of Cass Technical High School, who will major in Marketing/Management at Northwood University. She was an active participant in the National Honor Society, the Business Professionals of America and their co-op program, and the Pep Club. She is active in Mt. Zion Missionary Church’s Youth Usher Board and choir.

Lea N. Smith, a graduate of Cass Technical High School, who will major in Business Management at Kettering University. She was a member of the Business Professionals of America; participated in the Metro Tobacco Reduction Advisory Council and the Youth to Youth International Conference; and was a volunteer with the BET HIV/AIDS Rap-It-Up Teen Forum, appearing in several cities in that capacity.

Asia Wade, a graduate of Finney High School, who will major in Accounting at Bowling Green University. She received the highest ACT score in her class; was treasurer of DECA two years in a row, on the school’s track and field team, its Prom Committee and Chess Club; and participated in the UAW-GM Powerteams, a community service organization that provides services to senior citizens’ homes, day care centers, and soup kitchens.

The Foundation was established to honor the late Larry Doss, whose civic contributions included heading New Detroit; serving as president of the Coleman A. Young Foundation and interim executive director of the Schools of the 21st Century; coordinating the Detroit School District de-centralization plan; and organizing the Inner City Business Improvement Forum (ICBIF).

Doss also served on the boards of the University of Detroit, the United Way, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Harper Hospital, the Hudson-Webber Foundation, the National Urban Coalition, and American Natural Resources.
